My Winter Internships

I haven't spent much time writing about my internships, so I decided to write more about it.

During the beginning of the quarter, I wasn't really sure what I would be doing for my two new internships. My internships for winter quarter are at the Davis Feminist Film Festival (DFFF) and APIA Searchlight Directory. For both of the internships, I am part of a Facebook group specific to interns. Also, for both the meetings are on campus and usually includes an update of what interns have done. My roles for both the internships are different and I feel that I have learned from both. I will continue the internships until next quarter, so I will be able to say more about them later.

For DFFF, I check emails twice, daily. Emails seem to come slowly and not too many questions that are difficult to answer. Moreover, I send confirmation emails of submissions and their status. The internship also involves attending meetings with other interns. Through the meetings, I found out more about what else the DFFF is planning to do, including fundraising and events. I've helped flyered at the MU during a terribly cold and windy day. I've helped with developing a master email list to create a listserv. I helped voiced my opinion in art submissions for the art show. I think my internship for DFFF has been pretty chill. I thought the internship would be more intense.

For APIA Searchlight, I attend weekly meetings with committee members. I provide criticism and comments on designs for the directory, fundraisers, or any other designs. I also attend fundraising events. I also work with my committee, which is the marketing committee. For the marketing committee, our task is to contact businesses and ask if they are interested in sponsoring APIA Searchlight by purchasing. It can be pretty fun, but not very easy. My marketing committee had met the challenge of managers or owners, who do not appear to be present while we are visiting their business. I have learned more about businesses while searching for sponsorship opportunities. I learned that some businesses don't answer their phones. I'm learning more about which businesses might be interested in sponsoring.

Week #2 in February

This was a very busy week for me.

On Monday, I had an internship meeting. I went by pretty quickly. Afterwards, I worked on creating a master email list. This internship seems pretty chill, but I think it's going to get more busy when the day of the festival approaches!

I had a paper due Tuesday and I was almost done on Monday night. Just needed to edit it. However, I had another paper due on Wednesday. And, I didn't do much preparation for that paper. So, I tried to finish my paper on Tuesday first before Wednesdays. I thought that I wouldn't like Wednesdays this quarter because I have classes for about 5 hours straight. But, it's Tuesdays that I enjoy less. On Tuesdays, I have to spend the night preparing for discussions, readings, and assignments for my classes on Wednesday. When Wednesday finally approaches, it's actually pretty quick and that kind of surprises me.

I had my other internship meeting on Wednesday. It was picture day, so we had to dress up nice. Well, at least from the top. I like dressing nice, but most of my professional clothes are summer focused. I don't have a lot of coats or pants. I mostly have several skirts and blouses. We also chose a design cover for the publication next year, but it's still going to be edited further. Also, for the internship I supported the first fundraiser at Ali Baba's by just mentioning APIA Searchlight Directory.

 On Wednesday and Thursday night, I prepared for my midterm on Friday. I skipped a lot of interesting meetings to study. When Friday approached, I was really nervous because I certainly didn't study enough. There was so much more I should have taken in and known. I came to my first class on Friday exhausted as always. I don't know what it is, but I always feel exhausted in that class. But, I still manage to take my notes. After that class, I went to take my midterm. When I got in, the students were immediately told to take the blue book out, so that we could start promptly. And, the professor had a timer, so the class would know when we could all start. I think he was the first professor to have a timer go off for a midterm to start. We had 50 minutes to finish the midterm. I could have used more time, but I finished the midterm with what I could have said. Now, I just have one more midterm to go!

On Friday, I really wanted to watch Underworld. But, it wasn't showing anywhere in Davis anymore. My next choice was The Vow. I knew it was going to be very popular this weekend and probably make #1, especially with Valentine's Day coming up. But, first, me and my housemate decided to eat and we went to Hoa Viet Restaurant. My housemate got the seafood noodle soup. I was in the mood for beef vermicelli, so that's what I got.

Yes, I finished my vermicelli. Well, there's a tinsy part of the sauce in the bottom and a few vegetables. But, I didn't want to lick the bowl at the moment.

After we finished eating dinner, we headed over to watch the 7:45 screening for The Vow. I went to the parking garage and had to drive all up to the third floor. When we got downstairs to buy the tickets for The Vow, I noticed that a sign that said the tickets were sold out for the 7:45 showing. I was sad since we could have bought the tickets before dinner and we could have watched the movie. Also, I really wanted to watch a movie that evening.

When me and my housemate were on our way back to our apartment, we decided to go to the ARC. While we were there we found out about the gymnastics game and decided to go. However, we only made it to see UC Davis in the floor exercise. We were playing against Oregon state and Sacramento State. We ended up placing in third out of the three. And, we were only behind Sacramento State by about 2 points. Oh, so close!

Today, I really wanted to go to the Davis Farmers Market. I went last time, but I didn't get anything. But, today, I got a pretzel, chocolate croissant, and kernel popcorn. I was so close to getting apple juice, but didn't.

I like the Davis Farmers market. People of all ages and backgrounds are in one spot to support local businesses or goods. Also, some businesses allow you to try samples. There was this one business that had cheese samples. I love cheese sampling. Also, when I try samples, it allows me to try something new that I haven't tried before.

The croissant was yummy. It was very soft and definitely tasted like a pastry. It wasn't very flaky, so I like that. When I got the kettle corn, the person asked if I would like it tied. But, then, I saw the person ahead of me had it tied, but also lost some popcorn in the process. I wanted more popcorn, so I decided to eat some before closing it. I haven't tried the pretzel, but I hope I will like it.

A busy, but good week

On Monday, I realized how behind I was in schoolwork, so I spent most of the day trying to catch up. I also had an intern meeting for Davis Feminist Film Festival (DFFF). It was nice since I got to meet the other interns and know more about the projects that DFFF was planning to do. I really want to write more about Monday, but I forgot what I did. I guess I should do a write up at the end of each day.

On Tuesday, I was going to do some reading before class started and I spotted one of my friends. She asked me if I wanted to go to the MU to get something to eat. I decided to go with her, but I didn't get anything to eat. I didn't want to eat anything since it was so close to my class time. My friend got a egg salad bagel and she let me try it. I like it! Afterwards, she went to visit her tai chi teacher and I just tagged alone. Her teacher was nice and said happy new year to us both. Also, Stephanie saw me and talked with me a bit. During class, my professor shows some pictures with his lectures and I think that really hopes bring some context to what he is saying.

On Wednesday, I woke up a little early and I made it to the MU to get a egg salad bagel. I didn't finish it though. So after my three hour class, I ate it before my second class began. When I went to my third class that day, I did not feel that tired. Actually, I think that I enjoy my third class, so maybe that's why I feel energetic in there. I had my internship meeting for APIA Searchlight Directory in the evening. There was a new person added to the marketing committee and it is a guy. Yay, for more diversity. The intern meeting was pretty fun. Oh and before the meeting, I just took pictures around the death star. It was pretty dark and my camcorder has bad lighting. I actually tried to make it look more visible by being near the light.

On Thursday, it was not that busy, except, having to go to Tower theater right after my class ended. I was really hungry, but I did not want to go later and wait for the next showing. That would have been inconvenient overall. The movie was what I expected, except for the cigars. After I came back home, I felt very exhausted and slept early.

Today, I had a meeting with my History adviser to petition to double major. I think that was really helpful since it helped me realize that I am closer to graduating than I thought. It helped clarified some things I was confused about. In other news, I got an email to pick up the Human Rights Journal that I submitted a poem for a couple of months ago. It's the first publication and I believe it is an annual journal.  I was excited! As I looked through the book, I noticed that there was only 10 contributors and I am one of them. I asked about how the journal was dispersed and the person was not sure, but said that contributors and faculty would be provided a copy of the journal. However, I was curious on how it would be distributed to students on campus or not.

I submitted 5 poems regarding human rights issues."Give me Water" was the piece that was chosen. My contribution was the shortest, as it was less than a page. As you can see in the description, the poems is about child labor and what conditions children have to go through just to finish a job.

I really wanted some ice cream today. I was craving Ben & Jerry's, so I went there. And, yes, I got chocolate. I usually don't give other flavors a chance.

Week in Review

Monday was Martin Luther King's Jr Day. There was no class, so two classes were not held. I did not do much that day except come back to Davis since I was in Sacramento for the weekend.

On Tuesday, I had my one class and a internship meeting. I helped entered more films into the database and entered all of the ones available. Did not do much this day, except tried to do most of my reading of the other day.

On Wednesday, I had a seminar at 9am and I set my alarm for it. But, my alarm did  not go off. Luckily, I heard one of my housemates getting ready to leave or such. I  a intern meeting for APIA. The day actually went by pretty quickly actually.

On Thursday, I was going to go to one of the meetings. But, it was raining, so I did not want to leave my apartment. I also think that I enjoy my religion class. At first I didn't think it would be interesting, but I really like the readings and discussions.

On Friday, I really didn't do much except went to class and tried to get all my books that I need this quarter.

On Saturday, I went to Redrum Burger. Then, I got ready to go back to Sacramento.

My First Week of Winter Quarter

Monday
School came by so quickly. I definitely was not prepared. On Monday, I thought that my class was at 1:00pm, but I double checked ahead of time and realized that it was at 12pm. Luckily, I did not miss out going to my first class. Afterwards, I had a internship meeting for Davis Feminist Film Festival (DFFF). The internship supervisor went through a review and showed me some of my duties. It also included being in charge of the email. I then began working on the database and filing the dvds. After an hour, we discussed meeting times and internship units. Later, I left and got ready to head out to my volunteer meeting for TUTD. When I got there, there was pizza offered and it seemed very busy since we had much to do that day. We were choosing the winners for the Hackademy awards! I also got a hoodie that night because I reviewed 5+ movies or so? I was assigned to watch Contraband that night and I was excited to watch a movie nonetheless.

Tuesday
This day was much less stressful. I decided to drop that one class that I did not have a change getting into. Instead, I met with my adviser to check my major requirements. Then, it was time to attend class. During class, the professor did not go through the syllabus as much as I expected. I signed up to learn more about Students First and the meeting was that night. I am glad that I went. StudentsFirst sounds like something I really support and I am glad to hear that they are hiring!

Wednesday

I tried to sleep early the night before this day because I knew that I had a three hour seminar ahead of me. I never had a class that long before. When the time for the seminar arrived it was not that bad. Maybe next time it will go on slower or I will be very prepared that it will go on quickly. This is also my busy day and I had two other classes. After my courses I tried to relax a bit. I had a sudden craving for a cookie, so I had that with milk. Gosh, that is such a good combination. I had a internship meeting that night for APIA Searchlight. I thought I knew exactly where the place was, but there was actually two lounges. Luckily, me and the other person that was lost found the place. The co-editors fed us and we also had the opportunity to mingles with the other interns. Judging from who was present, the interns seem to be entirely female.That is a good thing, but I also enjoy the presence of the other gender. Our committees were also revealed that night through which color Starburst our cupcakes had. And, I am part of the marketing committee, so I believed I got the first committee that I applied for. We played a game and it was actually pretty fun. We tried to steal keys from a blind taxi driver and then the driver had to guess who stole the keys.

Thursday
I think I got in the hang of classes by now. I also met with my peer adviser for ASA. I realized that I have to petition to double major and for something else. I also got more books. And, boy are my books are heavy! I did not even buy all of them too! I skipped a meeting and I am glad that I did. It gave me opportunity to focus on one of the readings that I had.

Friday
Two classes today and they went by pretty quickly, despite me being exhausted for some reason. For dinner, me and my housemate went to Manna Korean restaurant. Then, we looked for the lotion that my housemate needed at Bath & Body Works, but they did not have it in stores. We went to watch Contraband. It was a really long movie.

2011 is Memorable

There are many reasons why 2011 are memorable for me. I am going to list a few.

1. Back to blogging more actively.

2. I had my first internship!

3. I began my first job!

4. I had my first exciting Spring break in the SoCal area.

5. I interacted so much more on twitter.

6. I began a google+ account.

7. It was this year that I learned how to drive on the freeway.

8. I made a Stumbleupon account and it has introduced me to some good reads or websites of interest.

9. I realized that I like editing movies, audio, or writing. And, want to gain more experience in final cut pro, HTML, and all those other good stuff.

10.I had Shingles.

11. I was so close to getting a Iphone. But, glad that I bought a new phone with much less limitations than the one I had before.

12. I believe I finished my major in Asian American Studies and my minor in Native American Studies. Now, I just have my History major to finish during the summer :)!

Things can change.

Today, I received two bad news at the same time. I didnt pass a writing exam and I did not get a board member position. I was really upset, especially when I found out at the same time. I thought that I was going to be sad the whole day. But then, I received a phone call from an unknown place. I answered it and it was from one of the places that I applied to be an intern. She asked me if I was still interested and wanted to go to an interview. My mood picked up really quickly. I think its a wonderful opportunity. Im so surprised that it was not taken before.

Class was interesting today. We had a guest lecture and she was very informative about the ICWA. And, I am going to be writing about that for my paper! When I came back home I found out that the contest that I entered decided to give everyone who entered books. I was surprised and glad that I still tried despite that the contest might have already awarded winners. In a few weeks, I will be receiving the book Carrying the One and I am excited although I have no idea what the book is about.

I also went to my last volunteer session of pedestrian/bike observing and recording. Im glad that I get reimbursed for it. The other volunteers that I have met are civil engineering majors or other hard sciences major. I am the only soft major. Oh well, I always like to try new things and get rewarded in the process.

I have been doing it. Going to the gym atleast over 2 times a week. It feels good. I am definitely more motivated now.

Finding the energy within

School began a while back and I already feel that the workload is getting too heavy. However, I still managed to find the time to go on twitter every night. I also think that I am addicted to checking my email and going on Facebook. I dont know which one I check more. Good thing is I am easy to keep in touch with!

I am so happy that I have my internship with Etiquette with Style and able to work with Ms. Addie. She is a very nice lady and I really want to help her out as much as possible. We have been meeting for about once a week and I think I can make room for another internship. I applied for a internship at the American Lung Association, but I was not awarded the internship position. Nonetheless, I will definitely be looking out for opportunities. I have already started my job search and I think its scary since there are not a lot of jobs that I qualify before because I dont have much experience or skills they desire. I am very much worried about that and I am relieved that I am starting my job search early.

Oh, and I have also been going to the ARC this week. Not as much as I wanted to because I have been busy. But, since I have been going I been playing really fun sports. I played ping pong, racquetball, and badminton!

So there is my internship, working out and academic work... I know that I must find balance in order to be able to relax and not stress out that much. I also need to keep in mind that I should reward myself every now and then. Because when things get hard it is nice to know that something will lighten up your day.

My First Internship

I been meaning to write about my internship for a while, actually when I first started. But, I am now halfway towards my end date. I really like interning! I cant believe I spent my past three years being focused on doing volunteer work. I find internships more rewarding because I actually get to work on projects and not just do menial tasks. I find it very helpful and that my internship is really helping me being introduced into the work world. I like my internship at the California Research Bureau. I cannot believe that I have my own office. I always thought that I would start off in a cubicle. Then again, there isnt a lot of employees because of budget cuts. It is quiet everyday, yet chill. I like being supplied with every office utensil I can think of and using their resources to work on my projects. Everyone in the office is very nice. My supervisor is really chill and friendly. I like the projects that I am working on and I am really learning alot. I get to do tasks that I did not think I could do before. I had to make some calls and its not bad to talk to someone; rather, the problem is getting the information that I need. I really do think that I will miss interning!

The weekend before the beginning of a new quarter

On Saturday, I packed and left. The luggage that I had to bring back was so heavy and I did not have one of those rolly bags. Next time I go traveling, I must bring one of those with me because they make life easier. On our way to the Flyaway station Chen bought some sandwiches to eat later. She waited for the bus to came and we both left the station. Upon arriving LAX, I ate my apple and thought that would be enough for me. But 30 minutes later, I was so hungry. I went to the McDonalds and bought a McChicken and fries and finished those pretty quickly. The flight back to SAC was not long, then again I was really tired. When I got back I waited for the 42B bus to drop my stuff in Davis While I was waiting it was sprinkling a little. Once I got back to my apartment I was excited that I no longer had to carry the heavy luggage. And that I was going to give Emily the gift I had from Socal. But first, I had to take the 42B again to go to DT where my mom would pick me up. When I got in the car my baby sister handed me a card that she drew and there were hearts all over it. In return, I gave her a Hello Kitty Lunch box. We were both content. When I got home I was really tired but talked to my siblings for a while before deciding to lay down. I was about to fall asleep until Cindy called me and Brandon for a game of Apples to Apples. The game was quite fun and we ended up laying about 4-5 rounds before going to sleep. Then, it was Sunday. I did not prepare much for school, but I worked a bit on some projects that I had been meaning to work on.

Accomplishment

This Friday I did a couple of things that I been meaning to do and I just concentrated on completing those tasks. After I had finished doing them and in a faster time and manner than anticipated, I feel quite happy. I like doing things and finishing them. It relieves me from pressure. I would not have to worry about finishing it in the future or eventually not getting it done. One of the things that I did was that I applied for a internship for one of the Assembly Members. I have not heard back yet, but I am still glad that I got as far as submitting my application. I like this feeling of accomplishment and will try to do more things.
